At approximately 6 p.m. on Friday, March 5th, a crew from Comcast was working in an area near Klein, Texas, when they punctured a natural gas line. Another crew from CenterPoint Energy was called in to fix the line, around the time two lines exploded. While repairing a small gas line, they hit a larger line, sparking an explosion in the 18700 block of Gleannloch Lakes Boulevard. According to a Comcast representative, a contractor cut a line that may have been marked incorrectly.
Reports indicate that at least six of the utility workers were injured in the explosion. Five were taken to the hospital for an evaluation. One utility worker was in critical condition and was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston. A firefighter was injured but treated at the scene.
The explosion caused damage to at least one house in the area and several of the utility workers’ cars. All residents or passersby within 500 feet of the scene were evacuated, and many other residents lost power. Residents were permitted to return to their homes around midnight when the fire had been put out. Power was restored the following morning.
